Wedding Checklist

Thank you for checking out the Wedding Checklist!

Wedding checklist:

A wedding date is one of the most important dates in a person’s life, so plan it as such. Even if the wedding date is a year from now, start jotting notes and schedules.

The days leading up to the wedding are very nerve-wrecking for a couple, mostly because the bride and groom are scurrying to make sure all the final major arrangements are completed. Those days, instead, should be focused on all the final minor touches.

Writing a wedding checklist will alleviate some of the last-minute frustrations. The checklist should start approximately a year before the scheduled wedding date.

Here is an example of one wedding checklist:

Year away:

___ Reserve the time and location of the wedding.
___ If the wedding is at a church, schedule a meeting with a member of the clergy.
___ Think of a color scheme.
___ Plan the wedding party, including the best man and maid of honor.
___ Plan the wedding budget.

Nine months away:

___ Choose the bride’s gown and the bachelor’s tuxedo and the outfits for the wedding party.
___ Order the wedding rings.
___ Start planning all the trappings of the reception.

Six months away:

___ Order the invitations and announcements, or start planning on printing the material on your home computer by buying the necessary software.
___ Register at a local home goods retailer to provide ample time to alert guests you have a wedding date on the way.
___ The more time guests have to buy gifts, the better the gifts they will buy.

Three months away:

___ Finalize floral plans (either ordering them or set up a plan of who will craft them).
___ Make sure all invitations are mailed.
___ Finalize music and photography plans.
___ Arrange lodging for out-of-town guests, if necessary.
___ Order the wedding cake.

One month away:

___ Perform the final fitting of the wedding gown.
___ Place a wedding announcement in the local newspaper.
___ Arrange the transportation from the ceremony to the reception.
___ Select the groom’s gift.
___ Diagram the seating arrangements of the reception.
___ Have thank-you notes prepared for potential shower gifts and for gifts given during the wedding.

Two weeks away:

___ Obtain the marriage license.
___ Start making arrangements for name changes to bank accounts, credit accounts, post office, etc.
___ Finalize the reception plans, from seating to entertainment and time parameters. Don’t hesitate to write a timeline of what should be scheduled at the reception.
___ Have a list prepared for gifts and who purchased them for the distribution of thank-you cards.

One week away:

___ Tabulate the final guest count for the reception.
___ Take a deep breath. The big day is upon you. No stone has been left unturned.

Not all weddings need a wedding planner. This checklist serves as a tool for all the right moves for that special day.

One aspect of the reception not noted: The best man’s toast. Odds are the best man will read what he scribbled on a napkin the night before. Don’t allow your entire wedding plans be a proverbial sketch on a napkin. The big day should be a beautiful work of art on canvas. This checklist will help you create the masterpiece.
