You may be confident that you know what to pack along in your back pack; just to be sure you will want to go through your items to make sure that you have packed the essentials. There are books that you can read to introduce you to the essentials but you are looking for a quick checklist not a good read am I correct? I have some insight to share with you that will be relatively quick and painless. Why don’t we go through your list of items together?
I find it helps to discuss method behind the madness as a practical measure. It helps keep you in charge of the packing; everyone likes to be in charge of something.
Why are we packing anything at all?
Are we out to take a long walk and return in a couple of hours? No pack is required, just good shoes, layered clothing, jug of water and a desire to exercise.
Do we want to buy expensive backpacking gear to feel like a real outdoors person and are we secretly hoping for it to rain so that we will not have to go through with this wild idea?
Perhaps our money would be better spent on a great outdoor adventure novel or DVD.
Do we want to spend the day with nature but the evening in the comfort of our pillow top bed? Your packing list will be short, but the effort extended to prepare is still quite valid.
Maybe you’re an adventurous parent ready to introduce your younger children to the primacy of nature. Your tendency will be to over pack. You will need to rely on your gut instincts here regarding comfort items but - really do - leave X-box at home.
Perhaps you are a seasoned backpacking enthusiast. You have been - there; done - that but just want to make sure that you have everything for your week long adventure because you’ll be taking along some paying customers.
Since you’re the one everyone else will look to for guidance-you don’t want to look foolish by forgetting something as essential as toilet paper You will want to share your “list” with your fellow back packers since there are some items that do not share well.
If your like me, you will fall somewhere in between the confines of these extreme characters and just want to be prepared for the worst case scenario on your mid summer three day jaunt with friends with two nights of camping planned.
If the trip is still on I offer these tidbits of reason to infuse into your thinking:
It is entirely possible for our back packer to carry everything needed in less than 30lbs for a 7 day trip! If he or she is 120 lbs or more this cargo is not going to feel too heavy.
You remembered to bring the butane curling iron and video I pod -genius that you are- what about water? Enter the backpacking checklist:
